A large volume of adventures
may be grasped within this little span of life,
by him who interests his heart in everything.
~ Laurence Sterne ~
On May 14, 2003,
my husband and I embarked on a journey that would change our lives.
For the 4th time in twelve years, Uncle Sam was sending
us off to another adventure in a new location. But we both felt
that this move surely would be an adventure, for we were off to
Alaska - and very happy about the opportunity to live in the Last
Frontier.
Edited to Add
(6/27/07): Little did we know that this move would be our last.
Steve is now retired from the army, we own a home in North Pole,
and our plan is to stay in Alaska forever. I continue to keep
my journal up four years later.
Our trip took us
from Jacksonville, Florida to Fairbanks, Alaska. We drove nearly
8000 miles, towing a 28' travel trailer behind us. Taking 30 days
to make the move, we stopped along the way to see friends and
family. Our route took us up the east coast to Philadelphia, and
then west to San Francisco, CA - with many stops along the way.
From S.F. we drove along the coast of Oregon and Washington, before
crossing over into Canada and conquering the Alaska-Canadian Hwy
(known commonly as the AlCan). It was a breathtaking journey and
I kept an online journal throughout our trip.
You can find our
itinerary here. Each day of the itinerary links to the corresponding
day in our travels. Caution: Because the travel journal is 30-days
long and includes photos, it is very slow loading if you are a
dial-up user. If you'd like to follow our journey across the country
and Canada, click below.
